To help you decide what types of flowers to use for your wedding, so far we’ve covered wedding flowers by season, picking DIY-friendly flowers, and matching flowers and accents with your wedding themes. \u00a0Another key\u00a0question to ask is\u00a0what kind of bouquets and arrangements do you want to make?<\/em>\u00a0 Different arrangement styles are easier with certain kinds of flowers and should avoid others.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The easiest way to work through this is to make a running list of all the flower arrangements you will need for the event: \u00a0bridal bouquet, bridesmaids’ bouquets, centerpieces, and ceremony flowers. Don\u2019t forget the little areas like\u00a0the cake table, your sweetheart table, buffet area, seating card table, and gift table. \u00a0If it’s too much on your plate, you can always delegate the more complicated ones to a florist and just DIY the easy stuff! \u00a0We get a lot of brides who prefer to have their bouquets done by professionals and leave the centerpieces, boutonnieres and smaller arrangements to themselves\u00a0to\u00a0make the flower arranging fun and stress-free part of the event!<\/p>\n

Now, you don’t need to use the same flowers across all of your bouquets and arrangements.\u00a0Keep your style consistent, and have some elements – kind of flowers or pops of a one or more\u00a0colors repeat\u00a0for a cohesive look. \u00a0But you can mix and match vases and containers and other accents. \u00a0This is a great money-saver, too, because you can keep the more expensive blooms to your most important arrangements (hello, bridal bouquet and groom’s bout!) and use cheaper flowers for other bouquets and centerpieces.<\/p>\n

Flowers for Wedding\u00a0Bouquets<\/h2>\n

A hand-tied wildflower bouquet<\/strong> is the easiest of the DIY wedding flowers and can be really easy on your budget. \u00a0Start with one or two kinds of medium-to-large focal flowers like roses or dahlias<\/a>, then add\u00a0loose, airy fillers <\/a>and greens<\/a>. \u00a0Here are some great combinations\u00a0of wildflower wedding flowers<\/a>. \u00a0For a cascading bouquet<\/strong>, look for more relaxed fillers and greens that can\u00a0give the drape you want, like\u00a0amaranthus<\/a> or ivy<\/a>. <\/p>\n

For flowers, keep stems long on roses, and think about stock, delphinium and other flowers that bloom down the stem to make a lusher cascade. \u00a0A more modern\u00a0round rose bouquet<\/strong>\u00a0is made of medium-to-large roses, tightly clustered and with little or no greenery. \u00a0You can add some berries or small accent flowers within the roses for extra texture. \u00a0A\u00a0pageant bouquet<\/strong> can be a show-stopper – look for long-stemmed flowers like roses and calla lilies, and add in some cascading fillers.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Boutonniere<\/h2>\n

Boutonnieres are the\u00a0easiest of the DIY wedding flowers! There are tons of online\u00a0boutonniere tutorials\u00a0out there, and you can easily swap focal flowers and fillers to suit your wedding theme. \u00a0Boutonnieres require smaller flowers such as spray roses<\/a>, ranunculus<\/a>, or chrysanthemums<\/a>. Novelties such as billy balls<\/a>, scabiosa pods, and thistle<\/a> are also great\u00a0go-to\u2019s for a rustic or whimsical boutonniere. You’ll just want to avoid larger flowers, like peonies, garden roses, and football mums, of course, just for sheer size. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Also, watch out for blooms that won’t do well without any water – don’t try to put sprigs of hydrangea or delphinium, for instance, because they’ll shrivel pretty quickly. \u00a0And more delicate flowers, like waxflower, don’t always hold up well to the handling that boutonnieres tend to go through. \u00a0And – don’t forget\u00a0the\u00a0boutonniere pins<\/a> and floral tape<\/a> and optional twine or ribbon<\/a> to wrap around the floral tape.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, arrangements consist of focal 1-2 varieties of focal flowers <\/strong>\u00a0(roses<\/a>, garden roses<\/a>, peonies<\/a>, calla lilies<\/a>, ranunculus<\/a>, gerbera daisies<\/a>, hydrangeas<\/a>, dahlias<\/a>, poppies<\/a>, carnations<\/a>),\u00a01-2 secondary flowers<\/strong>\u00a0(chrysanthemums<\/a>, stock<\/a>, spray roses<\/a>, delphinium<\/a>, larkspur<\/a>, snapdragons<\/a>, freesia<\/a>, mini carnations<\/a>, hypericum berries<\/a>, alstroemeria<\/a>, and asters<\/a>),\u00a0\u00a01-2 filler flowers\u00a0<\/strong>(limonium<\/a>, statice<\/a>, baby\u2019s breath<\/a>, wax flower<\/a>, Queen Anne’s lace<\/a>, solidago<\/a>, trachellium<\/a>, dusty miller<\/a> and bupleurum<\/a>), and of course, greens<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The most popular greens are the leather leaf<\/a>, huck<\/a>, seeded<\/a> and silver dollar eucalyptus<\/a>, lemon leaf<\/a>, coffee foliage<\/a>, Israeli<\/a> and Italian ruscus<\/a>, myrtle<\/a>, pittosporum<\/a>, tree fern<\/a>, sword fern<\/a> and plumosus fern<\/a>. Items such as herbs<\/a> and grasses<\/a> are also categorized with greens.<\/p>\n

Many of today’s popular wedding centerpieces take a simpler, cleaner approach, with fewer flowers in multiple containers on the table. \u00a0You can also keep things interesting by changing it up on different tables – no more cookie cutter for today’s brides! \u00a0Just remember that centerpieces\u00a0should be kept somewhat low, as you want your guests to be able to see across the table. \u00a0So save the gladiolus for ceremony arrangements! \u00a0Keep your vases and containers low to the table as well.<\/p>\n

Flower Garland Wedding Flowers<\/h2>\n

Garlands and wreaths<\/a> are a fast-growing trend in wedding flowers and are\u00a0surprisingly easy to DIY! You can purchase a handmade, custom greens garland and add flowers to it to tie it in with your wedding style. This can be done by wiring flowers to the pre-made garland and use water tubes for water sensitive flowers like hydrangea. \u00a0For a smaller, simpler garland, you can use floral wire and tape to\u00a0combine greens and flowers or\u00a0create one using a garland foam as a base<\/a>. \u00a0The same goes for creating wreaths!<\/p>\n

Garlands make lovely, lush centerpieces when setting down the middle of a long table. And really most any flowers and greens will do, so you can tie them in well with your wedding theme.<\/p>\n
