Pantone Swatchbook for Color Matching<\/p><\/div>\n

Twice a year, Pantone \u2013 the people who provide color standards for the graphic, interior and fashion design worlds \u2013 release a color trend report for the upcoming season. The Pantone 2010 Spring\/Summer Color Report is out with its top 10 colors for 2010.\u00a0 It\u2019s focused on interior design, decorating and fashion trends, but so are flowers and floral design.\u00a0 Use flowers to bring the hot colors of the season to accent your home or set off your event d\u00e9cor, or to perfectly complement a chic, fashion-forward wedding party.<\/p>\n

And the winners are\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turquoise<\/strong>\u2026also Pantone\u2019s \u201cColor of the Year\u201d. Think vital and tropical.\u00a0 Turquoise doesn\u2019t appear often naturally in the flower world \u2013 morning glories, maybe, but they\u2019re not found in arrangements often.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t introduce it in other ways \u2013 ribbons, silks, vases.\u00a0 Be creative!<\/p>\n

Tomato Puree<\/strong>\u2026 is a timeless, pure red with just the right blue-orange balance.\u00a0 Of course, there are scores of red flowers \u2013 but look for the more saturated, less \u201corange\u201d toned varieties:\u00a0 Regular and mini carnations, gerbera daisies, amaryllis, and red \u201cOpium\u201d or \u201cForever Young\u201d roses.<\/p>\n

Spring\/Summer 2010 Color Trend:\u00a0 Vibrant Brights and a Splash of Sun and Surf<\/p><\/div>\n

Fusion Coral<\/strong> \u2026is a refreshing, pale orange with pink undertones. \u00a0Look for salmon rose varieties like \u201cMovie Star<\/a>\u201d or \u201cAmsterdam\u201d. \u00a0Or include peach mini-carnations, pink limonium, orange snapdragons and salmon tulips.<\/p>\n

Violet<\/strong>\u2026If you remember back to your Crayola days, the big 64 crayons sets (the ones with the sharpener!) came with a \u201cBlue Violet\u201d and a \u201cRed Violet\u201d.\u00a0 Pantone\u2019s 2010 \u201cviolet\u201d is in the red-violet direction.\u00a0 Asters are a great filler flower in this vein, and the Blue Curiosa rose is an elegant and romantic violet.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be fooled by the names \u2013 the purple freesia and hyacinth are a better here than the their more-blue violet varieties.\u00a0 Others that will work are purple anemone, dianthus, gladiolus and liatris<\/a>\u2026all leaning more to red than blue.<\/p>\n

Aurora<\/strong>\u2026Named for natural light displays, this yellow has a greenish undertone.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a bright canary color, but adds bold pop to the palette.\u00a0 This spring, bring in some yellow tulips or some yellow cream roses.\u00a0 Yellow oriental lilies or yellow limonium will also bring in green hint you\u2019re looking for here.<\/p>\n

Amparo Blue<\/strong>\u2026It can be challenging to work natural true blues into floral arrangements because it\u2019s not a hue that occurs much in the plant world. Amparo Blue is even tougher \u2013 it\u2019s a warm but very bright blue.\u00a0 The closest match you\u2019ll find is a blue hydrangea, but keep in mind how varied hydrangeas can be.\u00a0 The other blue standbys, like delphiniums, really lean too far to the red\/lavender undertone and miss the spirit of Amparo.<\/p>\n

Pink Champagne<\/strong>\u2026is a beautiful, elegant and delicate neutral, which you can find with a peachy cream carnations, or in the hint of color in the rose \u201cVendela\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Neutrals\u2026Tuscany, Dried Herb and Eucalyptus<\/strong> are soft, rich tones that complement the 2010 Spring\/Summer collection.\u00a0 When you work in greens, try including some Curly Willow, or Spanish Moss, or some Seeded Eucalyptus.\u00a0 Think a little less bright green than the more traditional foliage.<\/p>\n

Go give it a try\u2026but remember:<\/strong> Pantone creates (and recreates) its color palettes in a nice controlled lab.\u00a0 Nature isn\u2019t always so accommodating.\u00a0 If you\u2019re working with Pantone\u2019s latest palette, or any other color plan, expect – and embrace –\u00a0 a little natural variation in hue and saturation, and you won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n
