Aster comes from the Greek word for “star” in reference to the flower’s star-like structure. Bearing a resemblance to a daisy, this flower is associated with plenty of legends. According to Greek mythology, asters were believed to be sacred to the gods and were used in wreaths placed on altars to honor them. According to Cherokee legend, two young girls who hid in the woods to escape feuding tribes sought the help of an elderly woman one day. Foreseeing that the girls would be in danger, the woman sprinkled herbs over the children and covered them in leaves as they slept to protect them. In the morning, the two girls had turned into flowers — asters.

In addition to being associated with many legends, this flower holds special meaning, including patience, love, elegance and daintiness. It makes a lovely choice for bridal and baby showers, weddings and many other celebratory events.

With a little patience and some love, you’ll be able to easily care for your cut asters. Follow these simple, yet effective tips:

When you first receive them, hold the stems underwater and cut off 1-inch from the bottom at an angle.

Keep your asters in fresh water mixed with flower food and avoid direct sunlight, heat and drafts.

Strip away any foliage that sits below the water level to prevent cloudy water and the growth of harmful bacteria.
