Here at Blooms By The Box, we exclusively carry freeze-dried flower petals. What is a freeze-dried petal you ask? It’s a flower petal where all of the moisture has been removed. Our growers use a special process that keeps the petal in tact with all of it’s bright hued coloring and most of its lovely fragrance. There is so much to do with a flower petal so in this flower petal 101, we’ll walk you through how to use them and any other FAQ’s!

Freeze dried rose petals in the shape of a heart. Varying colors of white, cream, and pale pink.

Ways to use flower petals

  1. When you think of flower petals for a wedding, the first thing that comes to mind is of course, flower girls! This is the most common use for flower petals. For flower girl scattering purposes, one of our 30 cup boxes will be more than enough and also give you enough to lightly line your aisle.
  2. A toss. Another wonderful way to use petals for your wedding is to hand them out to guests to toss in the air as you recede down the aisle. You can plan for about half a cup per guest.
  3. Line your aisle. In order to line your aisle or spread them really anywhere, you’ll want to account for about one cup per square foot for light coverage. Two cups per square foot for medium coverage, and three cups per square foot for heavy coverage.

Flower petal 101 FAQ’s

  1. Since these are freeze-dried, will they crumble? Nope. They will of course be drier but in general are still pliable.
  2. Can you re-fresh them? While they won’t go back to their original state, you can open the bag and leave them in the bathroom while taking a shower. The steam will soften the petals a bit but please note this is not necessary to do.
  3. Can I put them in water? Yes and No. These petals have gone through a complicated process to remove the moisture from them. You can certainly float them on water but please note within an hour or so, they can start to lose their coloring if brightly pigmented and will begin to wither and sink.
  4. Do I have to refrigerate these petals since they are freeze-dried? Nope. These flower petals are shelf stable and will last up to 1 year if kept in the box.
