Planning a DIY floral setup for your wedding or event? Whether you’re a first-time flower enthusiast or a seasoned DIYer, it’s easy to overlook a few important details that can make or break your blooms. Here are 5 flower mistakes not to make and how to keep arrangements fresh & fabulous!
1. Not unpacking flowers right away
As soon as your flowers arrive, unpack them! Leaving them in the box can lead to bruised petals, trapped heat, and discoloration. While they are packaged to perfection by our expert flower packers, they are still being shipped and need to be brought inside and opened immediately. Unwrap your blooms, give the stems a fresh cut, and get them in water ASAP to help them rehydrate & breathe. For more helpful tips consult our flower preparation and care guide.

2.Overcrowding Buckets
It might be temped to fill one bucket to the brim with flowers but they really need their space. Overcrowding buckets restricts airflow, increases the risk of mold, and can cause flowers to crush each other. Give your blooms room to spread out in multiple buckets or vases to help them stay healthy and hydrated.
3. Arranging too soon
We get it, you’re excited! But patience is key. Arranging flowers too far in advance can lead to drooping blooms by event day. We recommend designing your arrangements the day before, once your flowers have had a chance to hydrate and bloom.

4. Not soaking floral foam properly
Floral foam might seem simple, but it required a bit of technique. Don’t force it underwater, let it soak slowly until it’s fully saturated. It should feel heavy when taking it out of the water. Ensure the bowl or bucket you are using to soak the foam has PLENTY of water. Rushing this step can leave dry pockets inside the foam which means some stems may not be hydrated once arranged!

5. Poor timing & storage
Flowers are delicate and don’t like heat or direct sun. Keep them cool, hydrated and in a shaded spot even after arranging for best results. Don’t assume they will last overnight at your venue. You never know if they turn off the AC overnight or what might happen to them. Setup should be don’t as close to the event time as possible for the freshest looking florals.
DIY flowers can be stunning and budget-friendly but knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do. With these 5 flower mistakes not to make, you’ll be on your way to show-stopping arrangements that look like a pro made them!
