When Pantone announces the year’s color, we are all always waiting with bated breath to see what the next few years will hold in terms of trending colors. This year Pantone did not disappoint and named two colors of the year – Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.
Ultimate Gray and Illuminating
Pantone describes this pairing as, “Two independent colors that come together to create an aspirational color pairing, conjoining deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the optimistic promise of a sunshine-filled day.” Which we can all agree is important after a year like 2020. They also described their selection as “A message of happiness supported by fortitude.”

Yellow and Gray Flower Combinations
The use of yellow flowers will create positive energy since they are so bright and cheery. It is also said that this color boosts endorphins that make us feel uplifted by just the sight of them. Here are a few of our favorite yellow with a touch of ‘gray’ color combinations:
- Yellow ranunculus with cream stock and dusty miller
- Yellow ranunculus, craspedia (billy balls), white peonies, and variegated pittosporum greenery
- Gerbera daisies, golden solidago, and baby’s breath.
- Gerbera daisies, white tulips, thistle, and silver dollar eucalyptus.
- Protea yellow pincushions, mixed with yellow garden roses, orange dahlias, white wax flower, and seeded eucalyptus greenery.
- Yellow Calla Lilies with bear grass greenery, or mix yellow and white calla lilies.
- Yellow Freesia, yellow snapdragons, yellow spray roses, and Italian ruscus greenery.
- Yellow Tulips, yellow ranunculus, white button pompons, silver brunia, and lemon papoose greens with a few stems of plumosus.
When it comes to utilizing a specific color palette, it is important to not focus too much on getting the color exact but using similar tones to create a cohesive look.

While gray is not naturally occurring in florals, there are a few greenery varieties with a silvery tone that can be the perfect complement to a sunny yellow. Some of our favorites are – lambs ear, dusty miller, and silver brunia. If you are looking to follow this dark hue in a more traditional way suits the wedding party, linens and napkins are great backdrops to showcase a vibrant hue.
